Share the whimsy of the holidays with these magical family-friendly events this December in Ottawa.
National Arts Centre presents the Alberta Ballet’s classic interpretation of the Tchaikovsky favourite until December 9. This big-budget fantasy will pull you in as you follow little Clara to the Sugar Plum Fairy’s dream world. Meanwhile, Ballet Jörgen showcases their rendition with a Canadian twist: the show features the Group of Seven’s famous artwork as a backdrop. The familiar story takes you on a journey with iconic Canadian influences and visits from lumberjacks and Mounties, playing at Centerpointe Theatre on December 15 and the Shenkman Arts Centre on December 17 and 18. And arriving just in time for Christmas is a show for the littlest ones as Treehouse favourites, Max and Ruby, take to the stage. For a more interactive take on a Christmas activity, visit the Diefenbunker for “How the Grinch Spied on Christmas.” Located a half-hour’s drive west of downtown Ottawa, this once-secret bunker was built during the Cold War to protect the government from nuclear attack. It’s now a museum. There is no better place to learn about the spy of all Christmas spies, the Grinch! On December 15 and 16 from 1-3 p.m. take part in storytime and learn spy skills. This great activity is included in the price of admission and will be followed by cookies and hot chocolate.
