If the idea of taking a walk in Gatineau Park or a stroll along the Rideau Canal this fall doesn’t appeal, there are countless indoor activities and events this autumn for travellers to stay toasty as they enjoy the best of the Canadian capital city.
Here's just a sampling of some of the things visitors can do when the weather gets chilly:
Ottawa International Animation Festival
From September 19 to 23, thousands of animation lovers will converge in Ottawa for the International Animation Festival. Countless studios will showcase short films and movies that will impress even those who know little about contemporary animation. Nevermind Disney and Dreamworks productions, these artists transcend conventional drawing and computer graphics and instead create unique and provocative pieces.
This year's festival will take place at numerous venues across the city, including the Fairmont Chateau Laurier, one of the many luxurious Ottawa accommodation options.
Festival X – the Ottawa Photography Festival
For 10 days in September, visitors can get shutter happy and head to Festival X – the Ottawa Photography Festival. Similar to the International Animation Festival, this event will take place at several galleries and museums across the capital while featuring national and international photographers. Exposure Gallery will be one such venue, displaying the stunning architectural photography of Terry SanCartier, whose minimalistic and stark images present a side of building design that few people have witnessed.
Ready for a night of raucous entertainment? Visitors can get a hilarious abdominal workout at Absolute Comedy, the city's premier stand-up club where Canada's most talented comics take to the stage for an evening of unbridled humour. Every show takes place at the club's Preston Street location, which offers not only a great selection of local beer, but also an impressive menu so visitors can satisfy their appetite and hunger for hilarity as well.
Hip Hop Karaoke
Throughout the year, visitors can test out their rapping skills during Hip Hop Karaoke, which takes place on the 20th of every month at Babylon. Burgeoning stars just itching to showcase their talent to a live audience should definitely sign up well in advance - this event fills up fast. Those who miss the deadline should still attend, especially if they want to check out Ottawa's talented rap stars.
