A 20-year-old nightclub that started as a rather obscure pop culture reference has flourished into a great hotspot on Ottawa's local bar scene that travellers may want to check out while on holiday.
In the British cult classic, A HitchHiker's Guide to the Galaxy, one of the characters named Zaphod Beeblebrox claims he owns the best place to hang out in the whole universe. Playing off of this silly proclamation, the bar bearing the character's name was born in Ottawa.
Located in the ByWard Market, the Zaphod Beeblebrox nightclub is a hub of activity every evening, as local and international acts take to the stage to play live music or spin the latest tracks. To date, hundreds of amazing artists have played at this locale, including Alanis Morissette, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Broken Social Scene and Yo La Tengo. Even The Rolling Stones filmed one of their music videos at this historic venue.
The operation is run by eccentric owner Eugene Haslam, who was at the helm at the bar's inception and continues to help run it today. He says he hopes to keep the alternative music scene alive and well in the city by providing the venue's fans with interesting musical performers that have kept the bar trendy and on the map for more than two decades.
Zaphod has evolved with the times and keeps its calendar of events fresh and funky. The nightclub now even offers a free iPhone app so travellers can find out what's happening before they arrive. This March, the club plans on offering guests some exclusive shows for their 20th anniversary. Some of the things occurring during the week-long party include theatrical performances, bingo nights, concerts and more.
To find out more information about the anniversary celebration and special events being hosted by Zaphod, travellers can visit the venue's website and social media outlets for the latest updates and news. Tickets can be purchased online for shows, all of which welcome guests that are 19 years of age or older.
