Greek culture is known for its jovial dancing, delicious cuisine and rich family values. All of these customs will be celebrated in Canada's capital this summer for the annual GreekFest, held August 15-26. There is so much to see and do during the massive event that travellers of all ages and interests are sure to find exciting attractions, shows and demonstrations to participate in.
While all the events are exciting to see, one of the highlights is the Zorba Show. Talented dancers display their skills at the outdoor spectacle, where they balance on chairs and surround themselves in rings of fire. Those interested in Greek cuisine can attend a workshop hosted by The Three Greek Sisters. They are Greek-Canadian siblings that will create fantastic dishes like shrimp cooked in Ouzo, which is liquorice-flavoured liquor. Kids who go to the event can try a special baking class or have their face painted with the Greek flag.
Travellers can check back to the GreekFest official website as the event approaches for more information about the line-up and schedules of the various gatherings.
Those involved in the GreekFest in the past have done some wonderfully unique promotions to encourage all to participate. On YouTube, a video from last year's festival shows a flash mob scene that was used to celebrate the art of Greek dance. Dozens held arms and performed the traditional "Zorba dance" in ByWard Market neighbourhood, while onlookers clapped along and enjoyed the show. To date, the posted clip has had more than 2.1 million views!
Guests heading to GreekFest can check out many of the activities inside and near the Greek Orthodox Church in the city. To assist, there will be a convenient shuttle service to and from nearby parking lots sponsored by the event that travellers can use for a safe way to attend.
Ottawa is a great city to explore new cultures while on holiday. GreekFest provides an ideal opportunity for food, fun and festive celebrations to be had by all in the area for this exciting display of tradition this summer. Travellers visiting and taking tours of Ottawa will not want to miss this great end to the summer on their next holiday adventure.
